But, Did You Die? (Grace to Give)

B

There are few things that will develop faith and test patience like having a new teenaged driver in your house. Putting a student driver in the captain’s chair and taking the passenger’s seat is a demonstration of faith in them that often develops faith in God. The second your car pulls onto the road with your precious cherub driving, your prayer life immediately and drastically improves! Even...

Signs in the Sky: The Best Medium for the Message

S

Driving down any major highway in these United States of America, you will undoubtedly encounter more than a few billboards making you aware of crucial information for your current travels, or your life in general, and entreating you to respond in specific ways. There are moments when these billboards come in handy. For instance, when it is near a meal time and the family is devolving into...

The Worth in Waiting

T

The Myers family is fond of venison. Unfortunately, the local grocery stores don’t tend to keep deer meat in stock. Therefore, if we are going to eat it, someone in the Myers family will be required to venture out into the great outdoors to harvest an animal. There was a period of my life, be it ever so brief, when I went hunting with a reasonable amount of regularity during hunting season. You...

Can You See It?

C

Our son, JJ, just recently turned 15 years old. Like many young people of his age, his mind is consumed with the very quickly approaching, and seemingly unavoidable, eventuality of operating a motor vehicle. Unlike many of his peers, however, JJ is not all that interested in the latest and greatest shiny new cars that are rolling onto local car lots. As a matter of fact, JJ is rather unconcerned...

Walk With Her A While

W

There is a newly minted adult in the Myers house as of this week. According to the U.S. government, my little girl is now a grown adult. I realize that age is just a number and that nothing functionally changes in our lives due to the passing of this chronological signpost. It does, however, have meaning. It is important. And, if I’m being honest, this just hits a little different. Beyond gaining...

Making Room for Reconciliation

M

Two things seem to dominate social interaction and discourse in our world today. People seem to be perpetually offended or angry, and, in many cases, both. It doesn’t take much in our current cultural climate to light a fire in someone, and it’s amazing how quickly that spark is fanned into a raging inferno that spreads to others. So pervasive is the risk of offering offense that even as I type...

Flying with the Flock

F

Every winter, Seymour, Indiana goes to the birds in the very best of ways. Local wildlife authorities estimate that somewhere between 20,000 and 45,000 Sandhill Cranes call this region home. Sometime around late November or early December they begin showing up in the sky above and the fields around town. They are usually heard before they are seen, though. They aren’t exactly the quietest of...

Jumping Off Bridges: A Lesson on Peer Pressure

J

“If everyone else jumped off of a bridge, would you do it too?” This is the quintessential question asked when one has or is preparing to do something of questionable wisdom. I certainly remember being asked said query my fair share of times throughout my life. While I am well aware that the question is meant to be rhetorical with the assumed correct answer being a resounding “NO,” I often found...

Say Something Good

S

“If you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing at all.” I have the utmost confidence that all of us have either heard or uttered some variation of this phrase at some point in our lives. While the grammatical integrity of the statement is suspect, the personal integrity it encourages is above reproach. Generally, when the phrase is utilized in conversation it will be directly preceded by “My...

The Weight of Words

T

Whether or not you are a sports fan, you are undoubtedly aware of the recent documentary on Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bull’s domination of the NBA through the 1990’s, culminating with winning the 1998 Championship. In the current void of live action sports or new movie releases, this documentary captured the attention of a large segment of our population by combining several parts athletic...
