Going for a Ride: Finding Excitement in Every Day

G

Like most people, there is a fairly predictable pattern I follow on a day to day basis. On most mornings, I get up, go through the motions of personal preparation, head down to the kitchen to make my coffee, then load into the truck to take my son to school. My office is just across the street from the high school, so once I’ve dropped him off I head directly to the office to get about the...

Celebration and Sorrow (Such Is Life)

C

Today’s date is Monday, October 17, in the year of our Lord 2022. And so, it is with great joy that I wish you a very happy Bosses Day! Though the day will have passed by the time you read this, I’m sure you celebrated with great gusto and enthusiasm. Here at the offices of First Baptist Church, my Office Czar, as we call her, brought me a box of doughnuts in recognition of this most august of...

Sights, Smells, and Sounds: The Illusion of Simpler Days

S

Certain sights, smells, and sounds seem to hold supernatural powers. They have the ability to transport us back through time to the good old days, to simpler times. And, while the sensations that trigger this experience are different for each of us, I am fairly certain we all have them. Whenever I smell freshly cut grass or hear the rustling of leaves, I am immediately transported to a cross...

Seeing Blessings in Bad Days

S

We all have had “one of those days;” days when it seems nothing goes our way and it seems like the whole world has conspired against us. On those days, we perceive and experience everything through a hazy pall of shadow and dust. Even as I write these words, it strikes me as being comical and overly dramatic. It brings to mind the iconic children’s book, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No...

Heaven and Hell (Here and Now)

H

Music has a way of speaking to and challenging me in ways that few other mediums do. I have a deep appreciation for quality lyrics that not only worm their way into your ears, but work their way deep into your soul. I appreciate songs that compel me to pause the progression of my playlist to repeat and process the concept or ideas that are being presented. Certain songs just hit different. They...

Blessings and Burdens: Which are we counting?

B

Welcome to the proverbial calm before the storm! Or, perhaps it would be better said the squall before the tsunami… There are a great many amazing things about the holiday season. But there is also, without question, a great deal of stress and baggage it brings along with it. It occurred to me that Thanksgiving serves as a sort of “Last Supper” before the full flood of seasonal insanity ensues...

Too Blessed to Be Stressed?

T

We all know someone who is both painfully and perpetually positive. I have certainly known my fair share in my lifetime. These people aren’t just simple-minded optimists. It takes an incredibly strong mind and a truly determined spirit to not only find the silver lining in a sky filled with storm clouds, but to bathe in the warm glow of the light it provides. It strikes we “normal” people as...
