We Die a Little Every Day

W

I am dying… I was confronted with this difficult and startling truth on my first Sunday at First Baptist Church of Seymour. Dr. David Hinson, the interim pastor, preached the message that Sunday. I don’t remember all that he said, but he did catch my attention when he announced that every Sunday that I stood in the pulpit and preached to the fine people of FBC I would die a little, that there...

THAT’S MY KID!!!

T

We are entering a new, exciting, and extremely bittersweet chapter in the story of the Myers family. We just took our firstborn child to college. For the first time in her life, she will, for long periods of time, not live under our roof, or be under our direct supervision and guidance. She will take the next steps of becoming her own person and pursuing her own life. It is a natural part of the...

The Snooze Button: Finding a Balance Between Speeding Up and Slowing Down

T

The snooze button was first introduced on an alarm clock in the mid-1950’s when General Electric released the Snooz-Alarm. The clock allowed the user to press a button which would then temporarily silence the alarm, allowing the weary user to drift back to sleep for approximately nine minutes. A variety of theories exist as to why the designers decided to set the snooze for nine minutes instead...

Keeping Up with the Joneses

K

We have all heard the phrase “keeping up with the Joneses.” This morning, I found myself considering two questions concerning this popular phrase. Who exactly were these legendary Joneses?  And, why did they become the standard to which we so often aspire? In order to find some answers, I did what any reasonable person does in the 21st century… I hopped on Google and did some “research.” Theories...

Talking About Practice

T

Hall of fame basketball player, Allen Iverson, provided what may be one of the more memorable press conferences ever during his storied career. The focus of said press conference was not anything he had done on the court, but his alleged absences from practices during the season. At least 13 times in the course of answering questions, Mr. Iverson states, “We’re talking about practice,” in an...

Graduation Garb: Moving Beyond the Ceremonial to the Practical

G

Yet another school year is drawing to a close and with it comes graduation season. Over the next few weeks family, friends, teachers, and honored graduates will file into hot, stuffy gyms or out into the elements in athletic stadiums to celebrate the completion of various stages of academic journeys. Invariably, the graduates will be decked out in caps and gowns. In many instances, the...

Daylight Saving Time: No Hours Added

D

Sunday, March 14th, represents one of my least favorite days of the year. I have no issue with that particular day of the year during most calendar years, but this year it has the inauspicious and ignominious task of serving as the day we begin Daylight Saving Time here in the US of A. In my humble opinion, it is the single most annoying and inconvenient practice in American culture. But, like it...

Preventing the Drift

P

Snowmageddon has descended upon southern Indiana. I’m not sure how much snow we’ve gotten over the last few days, but I’m willing to argue that there is more snow on the ground at this moment in time than we’ve seen in the previous four-plus years. Everyone who’s held onto that snow blower for the eventuality of a winter storm or purchased one on sale “just in case” is feeling all sorts of...

Take the Cup

T

If you join us for worship at First Baptist Church on any given Sunday morning, whether online or in-person, you will notice a coffee mug on the podium next to my Bible. It is usually filled with coffee, which I pour into said mug right before the service begins. I wait until the last possible moment in hopes that when we are done singing and I begin preaching the contents of the mug will be at a...

Jumping Off Bridges: A Lesson on Peer Pressure

J

“If everyone else jumped off of a bridge, would you do it too?” This is the quintessential question asked when one has or is preparing to do something of questionable wisdom. I certainly remember being asked said query my fair share of times throughout my life. While I am well aware that the question is meant to be rhetorical with the assumed correct answer being a resounding “NO,” I often found...
