Storms in the Distance

S

Storms are multi-sensory experiences, at least that is the case here in the flatlands. You can feel, smell, hear, and see them coming. When a big storm is brewing, the air begins to feel heavy and humid. Any exposed skin starts to feel moist and clammy, much like the hands of a nervous kid on a first date. There is a very distinct musty and earthy smell associated with storms. Scientists actually...

Styles and Struggles: You Can Pull Off Anything You’re Willing To Put On

S

I would be the first to admit that I am not the most fashionable of people. Throughout my life, I have lacked both the resources and desire to keep up with the swirling vortex of  ever-changing trends. While I may not stay in style, I do have a style all my own. One way this style is expressed is through my diverse collection of shoes. Many of my selections have been described as eccentric...

Singing in the Storm

S

This past Sunday, sometime shortly before the ungodly hour of 4:30 AM, I was jolted out of my much needed beauty sleep by a loud and long roll of thunder. A spring storm was rapidly approaching and the thunder was just a precursor to the fun to come. Within moments of regaining consciousness, I began to hear the wind violently swirl outside. I listened as the siding, shutters, and gutters began...

Stop Stacking Struggles

S

In the year of our Lord 2019, the makers of the classic card game UNO made an announcement that nearly broke the internet by challenging long held understanding of how the game was to be played. The official UNO Twitter account posted a meme with a red background and bold, capitalized white letters that read, “YOU CANNOT STACK DRAW 2 CARDS & DRAW 4 CARDS.” They explained further in the tweet...

No Need to Panic (God is Still Working)

N

At what point can we push the proverbial panic button? Just when it seems we’re beginning to turn a corner and things seem like they are getting a little bit better, a brand new anxiety inducing issue emerges. Watching, listening to, or reading the news has become an extremely dangerous adventure. Good news seems exceedingly sparse these days. And, when we do find some good news, it is often...

Turn the Page and Trust the Lord

T

I still clearly and distinctly remember the stress and anxiety associated with the first day of a new semester of school. Nothing inspires panic in a student’s heart quite like the first glimpse of the syllabus for the coming session of academic adventures. As one looks over the list of assignments, it is extremely difficult to differentiate one project from the next. Instead they all bleed...

Keep Calm; We’ll Figure It Out

K

I’m not sure who Murphy is, and I don’t know if he discovered the “law” associated with his name, but I have experienced it many times over in my life. The popular statement of Murphy’s Law is “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.” In many ways, this principle strikes me as being a bit too pessimistic and fatalistic, but my own life experience, some of it extremely recent, leads me to...

Daylight Saving Time: No Hours Added

D

Sunday, March 14th, represents one of my least favorite days of the year. I have no issue with that particular day of the year during most calendar years, but this year it has the inauspicious and ignominious task of serving as the day we begin Daylight Saving Time here in the US of A. In my humble opinion, it is the single most annoying and inconvenient practice in American culture. But, like it...

The Sky Is NOT Falling

T

There are some stories that stick with you, increasing in significance and meaning as you get older and have a little more understanding. It is amazing to me how what we often label “children’s stories” present timeless truths in practical ways that can provide some perspective for current realities. Two that seem particularly useful in my life revolve around chickens. One is “The Little Red...

Own the Moment: Responding to the Current Crisis.

O

Much like everybody else, I find many of my waking hours occupied contemplating the new realities and possibilities created by the COVID-19 outbreak. Honestly, it is impossible to escape it at this juncture. All of our normal distractions have been infected. March Madness has been turned into March Sadness as all tournaments have been canceled. Likewise, professional athletics have been put on an...
