Mustard Seeds and Butterflies: Little Actions, Big Impact

M

Big events tend to garner large amounts of attention. As a general rule, one can gauge how important an event is to the community at large by how full the parking lot is at the high school. When the Seymour Owls are playing the Brownstown Braves, for instance, every parking space in the lot is full, vehicles are parked all up and down the surrounding streets, and our parking lot here at the...

Good Samaritans: Lessons from the Side of I-65

G

It’s a fairly common scene that all of us have observed while traveling. There, on the side of a busy highway, is a parked vehicle with hazard lights flashing. At least one passenger is on the phone, desperately trying to find help. Perhaps one or two are crouched over by a flat tire, leaning over looking into a smoking engine bay, or quickly walking around the vehicle trying to figure out what...

Mission: What We Do… Who We Are.

M

The First Baptist Church has been an active part of the community of Seymour for over 180 years. The church was established in 1839 with ten members. The first physical structure of the church was completed in 1840 and the church has been housed in four buildings in the subsequent years, including buildings behind the current location of Peace Lutheran Church, another on the corner of Tipton and...

Give It a Go (How in the World Did I Get Here?)

G

Have you ever found yourself taking part in something you felt was way above your proverbial pay-grade and thought, “HOW IN THE WORLD DID I GET HERE?” I can’t even enumerate how many amazing leaders and experts I’ve encountered who have indicated that they ask themselves this question early and often. From corporate executives, to professional musicians, to community leaders, to pastors and...

How In the World Did I Get Here? (Making Our Way to Life’s Mountaintops)

H

Have you ever had an experience where you found yourself asking, “How in the world did I get here? Why me?” I don’t think it’s too far of a stretch to assume that most of us, in one way or another, have had such experiences. I find such experiences are a common fixture when in the proverbial valleys as well as on the mountaintops. Failure and success have a way of stirring a sense of awareness...

We Die a Little Every Day

W

I am dying… I was confronted with this difficult and startling truth on my first Sunday at First Baptist Church of Seymour. Dr. David Hinson, the interim pastor, preached the message that Sunday. I don’t remember all that he said, but he did catch my attention when he announced that every Sunday that I stood in the pulpit and preached to the fine people of FBC I would die a little, that there...

A Good Neighbor: Making Service the Expectation Rather than the Exception

A

One of the highlights of my summer every year for the last decade and change has been joining young people from around the country to serve the folks in various communities with an organization called Mission Serve. “Mission Serve seeks to strengthen neighborhoods by partnering with organizations and empowering individuals to address physical, spiritual, and emotional needs through volunteerism...

Entertaining Angels

E

Over the past eight years I have had the privilege of traveling to various parts of the nation of India several times. Each of my journeys to India have taken me to different portions of the country. This has allowed me to experience a wide range of the cultures, foods, and scenery the country has to offer. It is an incredibly diverse country with an amazing cornucopia of traditions...

Time to ACT

T

The word “ministry” conjures a whole host of images in the minds of people. I find it often gets reduced to a program of some sort, usually aimed at some specific demographic of our community. We have a children’s ministry, a youth ministry, Sunday school ministry, outreach ministry, etc. These are not necessarily ministries, though. They are avenues through which ministry can take place. I...

Your Best Effort

Y

I have a confession to make; I am a low-key Taylor Swift fan. I prefer the songs from her earlier albums, when she was still making acoustic-driven country music. I don’t necessarily dislike her more recent offerings, I just haven’t really listened to them. My first exposure to her music came as I was retrieving a rental van for a Winter Retreat. The radio in the van was set to a local country...
