Light at the End of the Tunnel

L

2020 has been a banner year, and the hits just keep coming. I mean, there have seriously been overly dramatic movies that have contained more realistic and tempered plot-lines than what we have experienced thus far. Much like many of you, I am trying to keep it positive. I am doing my best to see the proverbial “silver lining.” I’m working hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel, but at...

Finding Contentment in the “New Normal”

It’s interesting to me to consider modern colloquialisms (popular words or phrases that we integrate into daily conversation). They usually develop rather gradually over time and, before we know it, they become part of everyday English. In recent days, I’ve noticed a few colloquialisms that have embedded themselves almost instantaneously. Think of how many times you’ve used or heard the term...

Life Is Hard… Grace Is Sufficient

L

“Life is hard. Then you die. Then they throw dirt in your face. Then the worms eat you. Be grateful it happens in that order.” I don’t really know who David Gerrold is, but I’m grateful for this quote that is attributed to him. While it certainly presents a painfully dark and narrow view of life, there are times when it paints a fairly accurate picture of the struggle I feel in my heart. For any...

Months of Mondays

M

I was greatly amused by a meme I recently saw while scrolling through Facebook. It was a simple white background with words over the top. It read, “We are 5 months into 2020 and it’s still January.” Though we have turned the page on the calendar and made our way into February, the slow slog still continues. My daughter made a profound assessment of the last month and change. As we prepared for...

For Now; Not Forever

F

The shift in seasons is finally in full swing. Just a few short weeks ago, it was blazing hot here in southern Indiana, with temperatures in the 90’s. Many of us were beginning to wonder if the hot and dry weather of late summer would ever pass. As I made the trek to my frost covered truck the other day, I found myself lamenting the chill in the air. While I love the snow, I’m not looking forward...

Your Best Effort

I have a confession to make; I am a low-key Taylor Swift fan. I prefer the songs from her earlier albums, when she was still making acoustic-driven country music. I don’t necessarily dislike her more recent offerings, I just haven’t really listened to them. My first exposure to her music came as I was retrieving a rental van for a Winter Retreat. The radio in the van was set to a local country...

Open for Business

My brother-in-law came through town the other night and invited me to grab dinner with him. My wife and kids were out doing youth group things for the evening, so I had some time on my hands and it was just going to be the two of us. It’s always good to have family in town, but I really enjoy hanging out with my brother-in-law and consider him a close friend. We had a little trouble figuring out...

Suffering and Satisfied

I am not a hunter. It’s not for ethical reasons. I find many of our furry woodland friends, particularly deer, to be quite tasty, and enjoy having a freezer full. I do not, however, enjoy getting up several hours before any reasonable creature is up and at it in order to climb up into a tree in the freezing cold of winter surrounded by the thick darkness of night. What was most torturous about...

Enter the Promise

E

We all dream of doing something significant and meaningful with our lives. Young and old, rich and poor, great and small, we all have hopes and dreams we are pursuing. I tend to think of our progress from where we are to where we want to be like any other journey. The beginning is generally exciting. The picture of what we hope will be is so vivid in our mind’s eye and we are more than...

Lighten the Load

Travel has been a big part of my life over the last 20 years. For the majority of those years my family and I have lived several hours from our hometown in northern Indiana. As a result, we’ve spent many a holiday or vacation living out of suitcases and duffel bags. In addition to these family trips, I’ve also gone to several retreats, camps, conferences, and mission trips through my work as a...
