The Cure for the Common…

T

We are a grand total of seven days into the new school year, and my lovely wife has already managed to contract the plague from the precious cherubs with whom she works. We are still experiencing temperatures in the 80’s and 90’s, yet somehow the common cold has already begun making the rounds in our area schools. It often seems to me that schools serve to pass germs along with knowledge. It...

Blank Space

B

Have you ever found yourself blankly staring out a window? I’m not talking about looking out at the view in order to take it all in. I’m talking about looking out into the void without looking for anything in particular. As far back as I can remember, this has been a practice of mine. Every now and again, I find myself looking out my office window through the slats of my blinds at nothing in...

Close Enough to See… Concerned Enough to Help…

When our kids were younger we made it a point to read the Bible with them every night. Mikayla had a copy of “The Children’s Bible: Timeless Stories for Children.” As the title would suggest, it contained a wide range of Bible stories and, since it was for children, it also had pictures to go along with each story. We read those stories over and over again during the kids’ younger years. As we...

Coming Down the Mountain

My family and I had the privilege of calling West Virginia home for the better part of twelve years over two different periods of time. West Virginia is, without question, an undeniably beautiful state. The mountains and the valleys, the small towns and untouched wilderness, the rivers, creeks, and waterfalls all provide sites that are beautiful beyond words. It is a place that truly must be...

Rules of the Road

Over the past two decades, I have had the privilege of taking several international mission trips. All of them have been amazing in too many ways to count. Besides providing me with the opportunity to partner with some incredible brothers and sisters of Christ around the globe, they have allowed me to experience cultures in very concentrated doses. The people, the languages, the mannerisms, the...

Red, White and BOOM

It is time to celebrate Fourth of July, Independence Day, the birthday of America. Tis the season of fireworks here in the U.S. of A. It’s nearly impossible to drive down any major road without finding several purveyors of explosive finery. During this time of year, abandoned businesses and empty parking lots become local hot spots filled with tents full of highly flammable and combustible...

Expecting the Exceptional

Basketball has been a love of mine for many years. On my twelfth birthday my parents gave me a basketball hoop for my birthday. I’m a March birthday, so the ground was still cold and frozen at that point in time, but that didn’t stop my friends and me from going out to the driveway to attempt to dig the hole needed to get the pole upright. We wore that hoop out. Almost every day, neighborhood...

Like A Child

The church, the actual church building of FBC Seymour, is a much busier place than most would assume. It is a hive of activity. People are constantly coming and going. The Fellowship Center is a particularly popular piece of real estate. It plays host to a Sunday worship service, the Attic Student Ministry on Sunday nights, a Wednesday evening dinner, funeral dinners, wedding receptions...

WELCOME TO MY WORLD!

W

Several years ago, I read The Practice of the Presence of God by a seventeenth century monk named Brother Lawrence. I was less than thrilled to be reading said book, and had it not been part of the required reading for the class I was taking at the time, I probably would have never picked it up. As I began reading, however, I was inspired by the way in which Brother Lawrence was able to see and...
