Your Way, Right Away

Y

In the early 90’s, the slogan for Burger King was “your way right away.” They have since changed it to “have it your way,” but the older version continues to stick in my mind. The whole idea is intended to convince you of the flexibility and customization of their menu items based on your personal preference and desire. As an organization, they want you to know that they have evolved well beyond...

What’s So Good About Friday?

W

A study released in 2018 revealed what most of us already knew to be true; Friday is the best day of the week. The study revealed that most of us dislike Monday’s, are indifferent towards the mid-week days of Tuesday through Thursday, and love the weekends, especially the gateway thereto, FRIDAY! The study explained that our affinity for Friday is due in part to the frequency with which we speak...

Warriors Wanted

W

There are two different types of people in the world. Those who approach movies as a momentary distraction from real life and those who allow movies to become a momentary transport to a different life altogether. I am absolutely the latter. So, if you ever happen to be walking out of a movie theater and see some fool scampering around the parking lot like a ninja, staring down other movie goers...

Knowledge Is Power

K

During my time as a pastor, there have been many instances where I was responsible for raising funds to help off-set the cost of mission trips or other church related activities. One of the more common methods of raising support was to essentially hire the youth and young adults of the church out to members of the community to do odd jobs. Some jobs were odder than others, but the oddest...

From Potential to Production

F

There’s something about the transition from one calendar year to another that creates a sense of hopeful anticipation. I’ve always been somewhat puzzled at why we make such a big deal about something that really is very arbitrary and inconsequential. Truth be told, no fundamental reality shifted in the moments between December 31, 2018 and January 1, 2019. All that really happened is we created a...

Spreading Christmas Cheer: A Social Experiment

S

The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.                 – Buddy the Elf Last week I experienced a week of Mondays. I don’t know if that’s a thing or not, but I’m pretty sure that’s what I experienced. It took every ounce of energy to stay focused on the task at hand. I had several unplanned situations develop, all of which demanded my immediate and complete...

Stealing Christmas

S

One of my favorite holiday pastimes is watching Christmas movies. Over the years, I have collected quite the library. Some of them are more modern releases, such as Arthur Christmas, Polar Express, and Elf. Others are Christmas classics, such as A Christmas Story, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and A Charlie Brown Christmas. In a strange twist of irony, the newest addition to my collection is...

Home for the Holidays?!

H

As the song so eloquently states, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year.” (Be honest with me… you just sang that line in your head, didn’t you? I know you did…) I am a HUGE fan of the holiday season. I have had Christmas music playing in my truck since November 2, which is the first day that Sirius XM Radio fired up their Christmas channels. In my office, at this very moment, I have a 4-foot...

Show a Little Love

S

In the fall of 2001, I began my junior year of college at Appalachian Bible College. My wife Robyn and I had gotten married just a few months earlier, and for financial reasons made the move from Indiana to West Virginia to continue our educational pursuits. To be completely honest, it was an extremely difficult move for us. We were newlyweds with little money, no job prospects, and no friends or...

Celebrating Community

C

While my family and I have lived here in Seymour for the better part of two years, this year afforded us our first chance to engage in the flurry of activity that is Oktoberfest. Before we even stepped foot in Seymour, Indiana, we heard about the Oktoberfest. During the process that brought us to First Baptist Church, our first face-to-face interview was delayed because of Oktoberfest. Several...
