Smiles Are Free: Spread a Little Joy

S

I don’t often pay much attention to menus at fast food restaurants. I am a creature of habit and am quite content ordering the same thing every time I frequent a familiar establishment. If I do look at the menu, it is often just a quick glance to confirm that my preferred culinary delicacies are still available before I order. Most of us are all too aware that the term “fast food” is somewhat of...

Shine Bright: The Darkness Doesn’t Win

S

Each year, I heft all of our boxes of lights down from our attic like a Himalayan Sherpa, minus their skill, strength, and style. Once the boxes and my person are safely on the ground, I begin the time honored tradition of checking the lights. Over the years, I have been exceptionally lucky when it comes to our Christmas lights. Occasionally, I will discover a bulb or two that has burned out, but...

FEAR NOT: A Message of Christmas

F

The Christmas season inspires a great many feelings in each of our hearts. For the vast majority of us, fear is not one of them. It is of particular interest, then, that in several portions of the Christmas narrative angels are issuing the encouragement, “Do not be afraid.” As a matter of fact, almost every time an angel appears in the Christmas story, this is part of their message. This comes as...

A Place and a Part to Play

Over the years, I have developed quite the collection of nativity sets. For those unfamiliar with this term, the nativity is the depiction of the birth of Jesus. It is often referred to as the manger. These sets often contain the virgin Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, a donkey, an ox, some shepherds with sheep, wisemen/magi with their accompanying animals, and an angel or a star. These nativity...

Enjoy the Little Things

E

I don’t like the term “ugly Christmas sweater.” While, I would certainly agree that most Christmas clothing is incredibly eccentric, attention grabbing, and perhaps a bit on the bright side, I enjoy seeing the different pieces throughout the holiday season. I own quite a few of these modern works of art myself and wear them loudly and proudly (emphasis on loudly). Don’t get me wrong, there is no...

Spreading Christmas Cheer: A Second Social Experiment

S

Last year around this time I conducted a little social experiment. The holiday rush was in full-swing and I was struggling to feel the spirit of the season. I was feeling a spirit caused by the byproducts of the season, but they were on the wrong end of the spectrum. With all of the wonderful goodness that goes along with Christmas and the holiday season there is a fine line between “holly...

Season of Joy

S

Tis the season… to debate about when it is appropriate to decorate for Christmas! There is a plethora of opinions, as varied and diverse as the decorations on a family Christmas tree. Some argue that each holiday must be given its own individual time to be properly observed. Each holiday should be observed in its own due season and the next holiday ought not be celebrated until the preceding...
