Procrastination And “The Great Pause”

P

My family and I have lived in our current house here in Seymour, Indiana for almost three years now. In the spring of our first year in this house, we began to notice some strange noises coming from our closet in the early morning hours of each day. Spring in southern Indiana tends to be a fickle season, providing residents with summer-like conditions one minute and winter-like conditions the...

THAT Family Member

T

We all have THAT family member… Be honest. Before I provided even a single sentence of context for the previous statement, the image of someone from your family jumped into your mind. That’s because we all do, in fact, have THAT family member. The eccentric one who marches to the beat of their own drum. The uncontrollable rebel who refuses to follow the rules. The single black sheep (or more...

The Church Has Left the Building

I have not always been a fan of memes. Actually, I still find that I am more often annoyed than amused by memes. For those who aren’t 100% sure what a “meme” is, according to Merriam-Webster, a meme is “an amusing or interesting item (such as a captioned picture or video) or genre of items that is spread widely online, especially through social media.” All those pictures with famous quotes...

Fear and Faith

My first ever mission trip was to the Bahamas. I know what many of you are thinking right now; “Mission trip to the Bahamas, huh? Really suffered for the cause, there, didn’t you?!” It wasn’t what you would be led to assume, though, for several reasons. First of all, we didn’t go to the standard islands and areas most people frequent when they head to the Bahamas. We didn’t see Grand Bahama or...

Rediscover the Wonder

R

I have done dozens of baptisms over the years. Of all of the things I do as a pastor, I find baptism to be particularly meaningful as it is a very public declaration of faith in obedience to the command and call of Jesus and because of the beautiful symbolism it demonstrates. I find myself getting emotional every time I lower someone into the water and pronounce the words, “Buried with Him...

The Child Inside

T

One of my favorite memories from my time in youth ministry involves a speech given by one of my amazing volunteer youth workers in a cornfield in Kentucky. It was my first major event for First Baptist Church of St Albans, WV. I had been at the church for several months, but I didn’t know the teenagers very well, nor they me. So, as is often the case, some of the teenagers were pushing the...

Pick a Path and Go

P

As is the case for most residents of the thriving metropolis of Seymour, my family must make the trek north to Columbus, Indiana from time to time. While we are huge fans of the local restaurants and retailers here in our hometown, there are occasions when we cannot obtain the products or services we require or desire here locally in Seymour. And, to be completely honest, sometimes we simply need...

When Questions Come

W

My wife and I divide and conquer when it comes to homework help with our children. She assists with all of the math and artistic issues. I assist with languages and composition. For the most part, we have been able to work through any questions that have arisen. Over the last two years, however, my middle school son’s homework has become more nuanced and has required me to engage my brain to a...

Beautify the Inside

B

I attended the First Baptist Church of Elkhart, Indiana from the time I was in kindergarten until I graduated from high school. At the time, the church was located on the corner of Prairie and Hively right across the street from a mall. It was a big, prominent church in the community; and while “times they were a changing,” it was, for the most part, a traditional Baptist church. I don’t know...

A Life Well Spent

A

I really enjoy all of the diverse and unique opportunities for service that come along with my job, but there are seasons when it becomes a little bit overwhelming. Over the past week and a half, I have officiated my sister’s wedding in Syracuse, Indiana, spoken and led worship at a youth work trip in West Frankfort, Illinois, presented a seminar on developing intergenerational connections...
