Amazing Grace?

A

Amazing Grace is arguably the most well-known hymn ever composed. Truly, a solid case could be made that it is the most well-known song in history across all genres (The Guinness book of world records lists Happy Birthday in the top spot). The song was composed by the Anglican clergyman John Newton in 1772. More than 250 years have passed since then and still this song is sung in churches around...

People or Problems: What do we see?

P

One of my favorite past times is people watching. It’s like reality television, but without the manufactured story lines that come with finely tuned editing and various levels of scripting. Out in the wild, people are just living life. And that, in and of itself, provides plenty to see for those who are paying attention. Last week, I spent a day on a Florida beach. While I try to focus my...

The Lord Needs It

T

As [Jesus] approached Bethpage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, He sent two of His disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.” Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as...

The Mondayest of Mondays: Turn to Jesus

T

Today is the most Mondayest Monday of the year. Mondays are notoriously difficult days of the week. There are the noteworthy exceptions to the rule during holiday weeks on which Mondays serve as functional extensions of the weekend. But, on most occasions, Mondays serve as the reentry point to the grind of the working week. To borrow a biblical parlance, it is a day of great “mourning and...

A Little Jesus

A

“THAT’S A LOT OF JESUS!!!” This was the first line of the caption for a photo I recently encountered on Facebook. The photo was of a box full of tiny Jesus figurines. The stated plan for these “little Jesus’s” was, and I assume remains, to place them around Columbus, Indiana and wherever travels might take them in efforts to “share a ‘little Jesus’ wherever we go!” It’s a very clever idea and I...

The Word of God and The Information Age

T

The Information Age is an interesting, and generally exciting, time to be alive. At any moment, just about anywhere on the globe, we have access to the vast majority of information known to humanity throughout all of history at the tips of our fingers. Cellphones have become ubiquitous the world over. As I sat at a campground in rural India, I was able to use my personal cellphone to look up...

Something to Say: A Controversial Commercial Continued

S

A lot of people had opinions about the Christocentric commercials that were aired during the Super Bowl, myself included. Over the subsequent days, I engaged dozens of people in deep conversation. Most of the concerns discussed revolved not around what was actually communicated in the commercials, but what was NOT communicated and how people might or might not respond as a result. As I...

Controversial Commercial or Honorable Offering

C

I spent Sunday evening like many other Americans, watching the Super Bowl. As a life-long fan of the Chicago Bears, a team that is perpetually awful, I usually don’t care who wins the big game. This year I would have been equally happy if either Brock Purdy or Taylor Swift’s boyfriend had won. But, if I’m really being honest, I watch the game for the commercials. I’ve been somewhat disappointed...

Who Is It REALLY About? Our Focus in Worship Matters!

W

While Jeremy is making his way back to the US from India, today’s blog is a guest post by Nathan Parker, Pastor of Worship and Media at FBC Seymour. As a worship pastor, I’ve come across many parody videos of worship songs and hymns over the years. While some are a bit corny, some are downright hilarious! One in particular that always sticks out in my memory has a man at the piano singing...

Learning to Listen

L

According to the maps app on my phone, I am just shy of 8000 miles away from home. I am on the other side of the world, visiting the Garo Hills in the Nation of India. It is about 5:30 in the morning, and I’m wide awake. I’ve actually been awake since just after 3:00am. It’s been a recurring theme for the past several nights. The realities of jet lag are part of the experience of traveling around...
