Make the Play

M

I never actually played football as I was growing up. Sure, I threw the ball with my friends in the neighborhood and played the occasional schoolyard game, but I never played organized ball with a team. It was one sport that was never available to me. None of the schools I attended offered it as an option. The only “football” available to students at Elkhart Baptist Christian School, Grace...

The Pain and The Prize

T

Sometime over the summer, my eleven-year-old son, JJ, decided he wanted to run cross country for his school. Actually, that’s not 100% true. He decided he wanted to run track for his school and, as per school rules, runners have to run cross country to run track. So, during the summer, JJ went to running club whenever he was able and then to practices as we entered into the school year. To be...

The Forest and the Trees

Several years ago, I discovered Mr. Bob Ross. He was a painter and had a show called The Joy of Painting on PBS. If you don’t know Bob Ross by his name, you almost certainly would by his picture. Bob had a well-kept beard and an amazing ‘fro (turns out Mr. Ross hated his hair style, but kept it for branding purposes). The setting of the show was very simple. It was just Mr. Ross, his canvas and...

Face-to-Face Time

We live in exciting times. Human history is in the midst of a fundamental shift in the way we function. The advent of the smart phone is forcing us to evaluate and redefine how life is lived in our current age and for years to come. Not since the invention of the printing press has humanity experienced such massive changes. Every aspect of life has been touched by this new digital revolution, but...

The Cure for the Common…

T

We are a grand total of seven days into the new school year, and my lovely wife has already managed to contract the plague from the precious cherubs with whom she works. We are still experiencing temperatures in the 80’s and 90’s, yet somehow the common cold has already begun making the rounds in our area schools. It often seems to me that schools serve to pass germs along with knowledge. It...

Blank Space

B

Have you ever found yourself blankly staring out a window? I’m not talking about looking out at the view in order to take it all in. I’m talking about looking out into the void without looking for anything in particular. As far back as I can remember, this has been a practice of mine. Every now and again, I find myself looking out my office window through the slats of my blinds at nothing in...

Close Enough to See… Concerned Enough to Help…

When our kids were younger we made it a point to read the Bible with them every night. Mikayla had a copy of “The Children’s Bible: Timeless Stories for Children.” As the title would suggest, it contained a wide range of Bible stories and, since it was for children, it also had pictures to go along with each story. We read those stories over and over again during the kids’ younger years. As we...

Coming Down the Mountain

C

My family and I had the privilege of calling West Virginia home for the better part of twelve years over two different periods of time. West Virginia is, without question, an undeniably beautiful state. The mountains and the valleys, the small towns and untouched wilderness, the rivers, creeks, and waterfalls all provide sites that are beautiful beyond words. It is a place that truly must be...

Rules of the Road

R

Over the past two decades, I have had the privilege of taking several international mission trips. All of them have been amazing in too many ways to count. Besides providing me with the opportunity to partner with some incredible brothers and sisters of Christ around the globe, they have allowed me to experience cultures in very concentrated doses. The people, the languages, the mannerisms, the...

Pray!

One of the best parts about having a dog is training it to do cool things. Over the past year, we have been able to train our 90-pound baby, Evie, to do quite an array of tricks. It’s been a very exciting process for us as a family because our last canine companion, Bridget, was extremely lazy and stubborn, and refused to do anything beyond the basic come and sit. Even those basic commands were...
