Young Guns, The Old Guard, and the Body of Christ

Y

In 2008, I began a long-term partnership with an organization called Mission Serve. My leadership team and I took our students to Beaufort, SC to serve the community through repairing roofs, building handicap accessible ramps, repainting homes, and sharing the love of Jesus in word and deed. It’s a partnership that has continued to this day. Last week, we took approximately 40 students and adults...

Do You Want to Get Well?

D

In the fall of 2022, we purchased a 1980’s, Fox Body Mustang for our son for his sixteenth birthday. The plan was for the car, lovingly named Miss Betty Blue, to function as a rolling restoration project. She would serve as JJ’s daily driver and we would repair, replace, and upgrade various portions of the vehicle as both money and time allowed. Miss Betty Blue is now an overpriced decoration...

More Than YOU Can Handle

M

“God will never give you more than you can handle.” I can’t tell you how many times this phrase has been uttered to me throughout my life. My guess is you have heard or even used this phrase yourself at some point in time. The phrase undoubtedly comes from the right heart. The only problem is the message communicated is wrong. Even the most blessed of lives will have a fair share of moments that...

Who’s the GOAT? (Debates About Position and Power)

W

Who is the GOAT? GOAT is a modern acronym for the coveted title of Greatest Of All Time. It is applied rather generously in a wide variety of settings and is argued vehemently in others. Nowhere is this more clearly seen than in the world of professional basketball. This has been particularly true with the recent accomplishments of Lebron James and the imminence of his retirement. This has led to...

Styles and Struggles: You Can Pull Off Anything You’re Willing To Put On

S

I would be the first to admit that I am not the most fashionable of people. Throughout my life, I have lacked both the resources and desire to keep up with the swirling vortex of  ever-changing trends. While I may not stay in style, I do have a style all my own. One way this style is expressed is through my diverse collection of shoes. Many of my selections have been described as eccentric...

Experience: The Best Teacher

E

“Experience is the best teacher.” This phrase is accredited to the great Julius Caesar. While I am eternally grateful to all of the many women and men who have served as teachers in my own life and in the lives of my family and friends, I must say that this statement rings true to me. Education, both formal and informal, provided me with a great deal of information and perspective to help me...

Shake It Off or Keep Grinding

S

The birds around our house have been incredibly active this spring. It’s not uncommon for us to have several nests in the few trees spread about our yard and one on the elbow of one of our gutter downspouts. Normally, we welcome our fine feathered friends to post up with us here at Casa de Myers. This year, however, I’ve been doing battle with two robins concerning the location of their nest...

Getting Ready From the Inside Out

G

Have you ever wondered how an average person would fare against professional athletes? Who among us hasn’t watched our favorite team or athlete struggling to perform up to our standards and thought or actually said, “COME ON! EVEN I COULD HAVE DONE BETTER THAN THAT!” I think it would be incredibly interesting to give a few average Joe’s and Jane’s an opportunity to put that premise to the test...

Calling to God (Seeing the Solution)

C

I recently heard a story that has continued to resonate in my heart and mind. The story, often told as a joke, is called the Parable of the Drowning Man. The story goes as follows… Torrential rains came upon a small town. As the rains came down the floods came up. Seeing the water rising, a local man began to call out to God for help. He prayed, “Lord, please save me!” Looking down the road, the...

Have Mercy: Swords, Scales, and Scars

H

It’s likely that you have seen an artistic rendering of Lady Justice at some point in your life. It’s an important icon in American history and culture. She serves as a personification of the concept of justice and judgement. She is usually blindfolded and holding a set of scales in one hand and a sword in the other. A lot of information is being communicated through this image. In our current...
